Entry 19: Happy That We Are Happy

Today, Ryan and I agreed to the Writer’s Assignment for the film. It’s an important, if symbolic, moment for us, because it means that the SPV, Contained The Movie Pty Ltd now owns the rights to our screenplay for the next five years.

The importance of that is obvious, but the reason why I say it’s also largely symbolic is that we own 50% of the SPV, anyway. So we’re basically assigning the rights over to ourselves, in that nothing can happen to change the course of the film production without general resolution, and we have a vote in that, so we’re protected.

Not that I’d be worried if we didn’t have that ownership. The terms of the Writer’s Assignment were quite standard and reasonable. One thing is for sure, though, I am very glad that I’m producing as well via our pre-existing company, Veritas Entertainment. That level of participation is what makes the deal with The Film Distillery so amazingly beneficial. If we were just coming to this as writers, we’d have the perfectly reasonable Writer’s Assignment – but nothing else – as a separate producer would’ve had to come on board and they would own 50% of the SPV.

Ryan came over and we discussed the overall deal. Once we knew we were both comfortable, we called Andy and told him so. He sounded very happy that we were happy, which is quintessential Andy, and that he was also happy that we could continue to proceed with all of the many steps that were waiting to be completed.
