Entry 23: Hawk of Rock

Got an email from Nicole from Rock Hawk Records with a Dropbox link for 3 demo tracks that Grandhour had completed that she felt could be right for the film. I was so excited to listen to those songs. When the collaborative process works well, it’s so fun and exciting. There is nothing better than seeing the interpretation of your work by another artist, and what’s a better example of that than music for a film?

As expected, the tracks were amazing. Ryan’s description of the first, Dynamite, was spot on – it wouldn’t take much of an arrangement change to see it as a perfect opening track for a Bond film. Gasping for Air has this awesome, beefy riff and lyrics that really spoke to me, and has such a catchy chorus. And then there was Half Alive. That track melted my face. For me, it absolutely fit the bill for a track that would work in a cut to credits at the end of the film, but would also make sense supporting various footage from the film in a video clip.

I said as much to Jason, when he called me later to see what we thought of the tracks. He was really pleased to hear that I liked them, and said that they were all shaping up to be a lock for their next album. It was amazing to understand that reality and know that we had our pick for the film. I stressed to him that it was Ryan’s ultimate choice, and that choice wouldn’t happen until he completed the director’s cut. Jason knew that – it’s not their first rodeo – and said that he would be happy to share more tracks as they built their track list for the second album. Amazing. My heart is set on Half Alive, but who knows what else they are going to come up with?
