Entry 18: An Unexpected Trip

So the cast read through totally did not happen. A very unexpected trip to Malaysia meant it wasn’t possible. I only got back last Friday, on the 27th, and this is the first chance I’ve had to scratch my butt, it feels like.

It’s incredibly hot over there in Malaysia. My favourite part of the day was the late afternoon. I would stay in the darkened bedroom with the air-conditioning and ceiling fans creating a delicious cool breeze that would relax me as I typed away on my laptop. Got a lot of work done on screenplay revisions and other stuff for the film.

In addition, I was able to secure some private equity funding for the movie. $100k out of the required $250k. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. If I’m being honest, it’s not a hard sell. The deal is as good as you can hope for from the perspective of an investor. If you’re so inclined to put money into movies, this would be the deal to do it. Preferential treatment for your cash risk, with good projections against low end forecasts and a budget that is capped to ensure that pre-sale money alone has a chance at getting the film in the black. Investment no-brainer.

It’s funny, because being back there in Malaysia reminded me of that crazy time from October to December the previous year, when Ryan and I worked our butts off to get the screenplays for Contained and Waterborne in on time for consideration. I was in Malaysia during that period, also. The way Ryan and I work is, we can set up ‘task lists’ together and then go away separately to work through them. We communicate constantly using the collaboration functions in Google, and can get a lot done with that approach. It’s nowhere near as efficient as being in the same room, but it’s close. Back then, I did a lot of work in that cool and dark room; working through the task lists we had set for ourselves before I left Australia. It was nice, and a little strange, to be back there doing work on Contained with the knowledge that it was selected for production.

Anyway, back to reality in Australia. A mountain of ‘day job’ work awaits me, and I need to get that cast read through back on track.
